A Safety Instrumented System (SIS) is designed to monitor and detect when an unacceptable or dangerous process condition occurs. Upon detection,
the SIS will achieve and maintain a predefined safe state for the process under control. Safety Instrumented Systems are separate and independent from the processes Distributed Control System (DCS). A typical SIS is composed of flow transmitters, pressure transmitters, shutdown stations, actuators, control system and etc.
EEC’s (Eta Engineering Consultants) SIS design team is familiar with the SIS safety life cycles found in ANSI/ISA S84.01-1996, IEC 61508, and IEC 61511. Generally, internal standards and practices are developed along with Safety Integrity Level (SIL) targets. A Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) document is then used to prepare Safety Requirement Specifications (SRS). The SRS is then used to design the SIS. Typically, EEC partners with our external risk assessment experts to insure a high quality product is produced for our clients. EEC’s SIS team of Electrical, Instrument, Mechanical, Safety and Process Engineers along with our Piping designers can provide a complete SIS construction design package that includes the following:
- Safety Integrity Level (SIL) selection and verification
- Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA)
- Safety Requirement Specifications (SRS)
- Cause and Effect Matrix
- P&ID Modifications
- Instrument Database Support
- Process piping design changes to support SIS implementation
- Instrument specification and selection
- Instrument installation details
- Orifice plate design and specification
- Electrical and Instrumentation wiring and distribution
- Marshalling Panels
- Cable tray and conduit Routing
- Lighting Panel design
- Field junction boxes
- Safety Instrumented Control Software Design
- Site Support
EEC also has the experience and knowledge base to help make the construction phase go smoothly. EEC doesn’t deliver a paper design package and stop. Upon the client’s request EEC can facilitate:
- Installation
- Calibration
- Control System Function Checks
- Commissioning
- Startup
- Construction Support
EEC also has the experience and knowledge base to help make the construction phase go smoothly. EEC doesn’t deliver a paper design package and stop. Upon the client’s request EEC can facilitate:
- Drawing reviews for permits, construction, and for record conditions
- Construction planning
- Start-up support
- Bid process support
- Review of submittals from contractors
- On-site construction support
- Technical support to contractors and vendors
- Permitting
- Any other aspect of project management during the construction phase
- Record Drawings
EEC has a dedicated team of CADD staff members that will take redlines and incorporate them to generate a “for record” package. This ensures the final “for record” package matches what was constructed. This is highly beneficial for future upgrades and trouble shooting.
Since EEC is a multidiscipline engineering firm we can provide this support across all disciplines: Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Structural, Process, etc.
